While UPVC is very low-maintenance and long-lasting – it does still require regular cleaning to keep it looking its best.
In winter months especially, grime and dirt can build up and leave frames looking dull and dirty.
So what is the best way to clean UPVC window frames to keep them looking clean and shiny without causing any damage or discolouration?
Follow these simple safe cleaning tips:
- Use a gentle cleaning solution: Start by preparing a mild cleaning solution. Mix warm water with a small amount of washing up liquid. Avoid using abrasive or harsh chemicals, or scouring pads or brushes, as they can damage the UPVC surface.
- Remove loose dirt: Before applying the cleaning solution, use a hoover, soft brush or cloth to remove loose dirt, dust, and cobwebs from the surface. This prevents scratching during the cleaning process.
- Wipe down surfaces: Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the soapy water mixture and gently wipe down the UPVC surfaces. Pay extra attention to areas with stains or dirt buildup. For stubborn stains, you can use a non-abrasive scrubbing pad.
- Rinse thoroughly: After cleaning, rinse the UPVC thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. Ensure all soap is washed away, as any leftover residue can attract more dirt and cause streaks.
- Dry with a soft cloth: Use a clean, dry, and lint-free cloth to wipe down the UPVC surfaces. This step helps prevent water spots and streaks, leaving your UPVC looking polished and clean.
Don’t forget to clean the glass panes too
For sparklingly clean and clear glass, the most effective cleaning method is to mix two cups of water with 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup of liquid soap.
Take some crunched up newspaper, and dip it into the solution. Next, wipe the glass in small circular motions, working your way around the entire pane until all dirt has been banished.
There are glass cleaners available in supermarkets – but this old-fashioned method is cheaper and far more effective in preventing smears.
Make sure NEVER use the following products on UPVC
Bleach – this will discolour the frames
Cif and Jif-type cream cleaners – they're too harsh and abrasive
Methylated spirits – this will discolour
Nail varnish remover – this will also discolour
WD40 – this will cause permanent damage
White spirits – this will also damage the frames
Wire wool or iron wool – this will scratch
Scouring pads – these will also scratch the surface
Including these practices into your home maintenance will help ensure your UPVC window frames and doors stay clean, attractive, and in good condition for years to come.
Regular maintenance not only enhances the appearance of your UPVC but also prolongs its lifespan, saving you time and money on replacements.
